Dandruff is a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis, a skin condition marked by large yellow scales, redness and inflammation of the scalp, or other areas of skin. While you might associate with dry dandruff, scalp flaking, "it is actually caused by excess oil, explains:" Dr. Charlene Linzon, dermatologist, lecturer and director of the University Toronto School of Hair Clinic.
The culprit here is a common yeast called Malassezia-development on everyone, and it eats oil from the scalp, Lincoln said.

And what do the scales in favor of dandruff depends on the individual: how much oil your scalp to create, and how strongly the yeast to grow. "The enzymes decompose the scalp oil, leaving behind a product [polyunsaturated fatty acids] that causes dandruff and flaking related to irritation, inflammation and scaling to determine seborrheic dermatitis," Linton said. Dandruff is also more likely to develop in certain stages of life, such as in infancy (called cradle cap), and around puberty, when oil (sebum) increased to provide more details food for yeast. Stress also increases oil production.

Fortunately, you can get this problem under control (OTC) products over-the-counter. Start by shampooing your scalp regularly with a medicated shampoo to reduce mucus. (Note: Health Canada recommends that dandruff products, even OTC, should never be used on children under two without consultation with a doctor.) Here's choice you:
1. Antifungals
Example: Head & Shoulders Classic, Selsun Blue, Nizoral
How they work: The active ingredient is zinc pyrithione in the (Head & Shoulders Classic), selenium sulphide (Selsun Blue) and ketoconazole (Nizoral). They slow down the growth of yeast causes flaking and scaling.
Need to know: Select a zinc pyrithione product first because it is lightweight and aesthetically acceptable, suggests Debra Sibbald, a professor at the University of Toronto's Leslie Dan Faculty of pharmacy; product with selenium sulphide reserves or ketoconazole for tougher dandruff. Selenium sulphide or not used within 48 hours zinc pyrithione dyeing or perming hair after; selenium sulphide can cause increased breakage, and zinc pyrithione may interfere with hair dyed metal deposits. Do not let selenium sulphide on the hair, scalp or skin for long periods (eg, overnight), because it can cause irritation.
2. Coal Tar
Example: Neutrogena T / Gel Therapeutic Shampoo, Polytar, Denorex
How they work: coal tar, the active ingredient in these products, slows skin cell cycle, and also acts as an anti-inflammatory, Lincoln said.
Need to know: It may be the number of hair (especially blonde or gray) and skin, and it can increase light sensitive skin.
3. Salicylic Acid
Example: Sebulex, Seb cut
How they work: Salicylic acid boasts one keratolytic agent, help loosen and expel scale, explain Lincoln.
Need to know: It can dry the scalp too much, causing more flaking.
Use the product correctly
How you use dandruff can affect how they Scale. Dr. Charlene Linzon, a dermatologist, offers these tips:

• The switch products regularly, alternating between two or three types. For example, you could use, say, Nizoral one day and the next Head & Shoulders; or alternately every second or third, you shampoo.

• Leave the shampoo on long enough to do its job five to 10 minutes, or, for a more intensive treatment, from 20 to 30 minutes (once every few weeks).

• Use more often. Labels often suggest using a shampoo twice a week, but daily use is very helpful for some. (Just look for dry hair and broken a sign you're overdoing.)

• A two-step process is more effective in fighting dandruff, so instead of using "2-in-1" products, shampoo and follow with one thing. Apply it only to ponytail to avoid creating a greasier scalp.
